Etienne Bax and Nicolas Musset finally clinched the sidecar motocross world title at Markelo. That happened in the first heat already, despite the fact that mechanical trouble kept them from the finish. They did finish second in the last heat to underline their triumph.
With the last round of the series on home soil only a major disaster could keep them from the title. A large crowd arrived in anticipation of their expected victory. The team qualified second on Saturday, setting the scene for a successful weekend.
Bax was second in the early stages of the opening heat. After an attack on the Willemsen combo, they took over the lead. Unfortunately, mechanical trouble kept them from the finish, but title rivals Giraud got no further than 8th, which secured the title for the Bax duo.
With the pressure of, the team was nonetheless motivated in the second heat to treat the home crowd. They took the early lead, but had to yield to Willemsen and finished second.
Although disappointed at not having ended the season with a victory, the world title is more than compensation enough, and the team was full of thanks for their sponsors and supporters as the reality sank in.
